ABOUT THE MANGROVE ARMY
The Mangrove Army arose from a program organized by the Holloways Beach Environmental Education Centre. Thirteen students in total from four different schools were selected to take part in a conservation organization. We all had to choose a topic, and I chose mangroves. Why? Because I was inspired to protect them after seeing a section of bank on the Barron River that was bare of mangroves and slowly eroding away. That, I realized, will be the fate of all rivers if we do not protect the mangroves in our catchment.
My name is Harmonie, and I am a 9-year-old student of Whitfield State School. I love to read and sing, and I enjoy tackling large projects such as the one I now undertake; But I could never have made it this far without help.
Thank you to Annette Ryan, my teacher-librarian, Whitfield teacher representative at Holloways Beach Environmental Education Centre and all-round nice person, for pushing me along when I didn't have the heart to go on; to Mrs Charlton and Mrs Underwood, the fantastic teacher-mentors at Holloways Beach, for correcting my mistakes and helping me with all manner of things; to Steve Bailey from Terrain, for assisting me in my research and allowing me to come to an OFFSET program planting to boost my knowledge; to Louise Johns of the Queensland Government Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, for assisting me in getting on my way and advising me on things I ought to consider; and to Josh Coates, for giving up his time to hep me and advising me on my next step.
